There are a number of ways to fund your future study when you upskill or reskill for a career change. One form of education that is getting a lot of attention right now is the Undergraduate Certificate. Through Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) and programs such as the Future of Work (FOW) initiative, career changers and students are finding the support they need to gain new skills.
Upskill with an Undergraduate Certificate
The Undergraduate Certificate is a formally recognised higher education qualification, issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This new qualification type was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as a way to fill community and industry needs by reskilling people in the most in-demand areas.
Students enrolled in Undergraduate Certificate programs may be eligible for CSP funding and the FOW program. Your Undergraduate Certificate can also provide a pathway to further study, with credit provided from your Certificate studies if you then choose to pursue an Undergraduate Diploma or Degree.
Find Support with a Commonwealth Supported Place
A Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) is a government subsidy provided to assist students with their course fees for Undergraduate (and occasionally Postgraduate) study.
You may be eligible to receive a CSP for your Undergraduate Certificate if you are an Australian citizen or a New Zealand citizen or permanent visa holder resident in Australia.
With a CSP, your fees will be subsidised, and you will not have to pay anything back, as this is a support subsidy and not a loan. You will, however, have to pay any student contribution amount that is not covered by the CSP. You can find out how much the student contribution amount will be by contacting your education provider. If you are eligible, then you can seek a HECS-HELP loan to cover the student contribution amount.
All Undergraduate Certificates at Coder Academy offer CSPs through the Australian Government’s Graduate Job Ready package, however, places are limited, so it’s best to apply early if you believe you may be eligible.
Check Your Eligibility for the Future of Work Program
If you live in an eligible regional area, then you may be able to access the Future of Work Program. This joint initiative from BHP and the Department of Education, Skills and Employment helps students to upskill or reskill by covering their student contribution amount and providing further support for other study-related expenses.
This program is designed to prepare students to become the regional workforce of the future and to assist with Australia’s economic recovery as we face the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program is currently available to students who live in the following regional areas:
- The Hunter region, New South Wales
- The Pilbara and the Goldfields region, Western Australia
- Roxby Downs and the Upper Spencer Gulf, South Australia
- The Bowen Basin and the Mackay region, Queensland
The Future of Work Program will create new training opportunities for up to 1,000 Australians in regional areas by funding students undertaking short courses (Undergraduate Certificates and Graduate Certificates) and advanced apprenticeships in key regional areas.
Completing an Undergraduate Certificate can be a great way to reskill for future employment, or to set your feet on the path for further study opportunities. With a range of programs offering financial assistance, students can find the support they need to learn new skills.
If you think you may be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place, or the assistance of the Future of Work Program to support your Undergraduate Certificate studies, then contact a course adviser to learn more. You may also learn about other opportunities, including scholarships which could help fund any further study you choose to pursue.
